Lighting Up the Night Sky
One of the incredible things about living this far north is how often we get to enjoy a good aurora borealis storm. I will never forget the first time I saw the northern lights in March of 2023. I had no idea what to expect, and was looking toward the horizon at a faint glow when suddenly the whole sky above my house lit up in greens and purples. I remember just standing in the snow in my backyard in such awe that I couldn’t even feel how freezing cold it was. (Miraculously, I kept all my toes and fingers that night). I remember trying to finally go to bed after being outside for several hours and realizing that the storm was so strong, I could actually still see the lights through the bedroom windows. Seeing the northern lights was one of the top experiences on my life to do list at the time, and as many times as I’ve seen them since, it has never gotten old.
Northern lights dancing above my house
We had a surprise storm on Friday night and it stayed strong for just long enough after dark to go to one of my favorite sky watching spots. While we were enjoying the show, a chorus of loon wails and tremolos started up from what seemed like every corner of the lake.
Another great night remembering why I would never live anywhere else.
Check out the video below of loons calling and some photos from Friday night.
Sounds up for loons calling on the lake
